The 2003 IndyGolf Golfers' Choice Awards
The Dream 18

We asked Central Indiana golfers to choose their favorite 18 holes.
This mythical par 72 course has about 52 sand traps,
water on 16 holes, and plenty of elevation change and trees.

Congratulations and our thanks go to all the Architects and Superintendents
that have provided us with so much enjoyment.

We also had IGGCA voting in 2001.

1 Twin Bridges GC

Hole 2

4 395 370 305 11 Lohmann Golf Designs
A pond flanking the right side of the fairway requires placement on drive to avoid traps on the left. Green is protected by sand and grass bunkers with open access on the right side.
2 Links at Heartland Crossing

Hole 10

5 542 478 462 9 Steve Smyers and Nick Price
Slam away on the first shot but the second must navigate a lake on the right and sand on the left. Approach and green runs sharply downhill right from mound to lake.
3 Purgatory GC

Hole 2

4 442 394 338 5 Ron Kern
Dog leg left over a lake. Bite off what you can chew. If you're too conservative the sand past the fairway will come into play. If you're too aggressive the water will let you know.
4 Buffer Park GC

Hole 6

3 160 119 97 7 Stan Burton
Short hole with water, rocks, and sand protecting left side and front of green. A large bail-out area to the right makes this an easy bogey but a hard par.
5 The Fort GC

Hole 4

4 479 381 328 15 Pete Dye
Long, scenic downhill hole with an extremely undulating fairway which can toss balls to the left side hidden bunkers. Rolling green will also direct balls left.
6 Hanging Tree GC

Hole 6

5 506 487 448 13 Gary and Ron Kern
An uphill drive can carry a mounded bunker system to shortcut the hole and possibly reach in two. The downhill approach shot normally lays up in front of pond. The more adventurous head for a green protected by sand, water, and concrete.
7 Ironwood GC

Lakes Course Hole 6

4 425 408 289 1 Bob Thompson and Art Kaser
The back tees have a long carry over water to a narrow fairway. Wet or woods await any off shot. Down the fairway, the lake on the left is aided by bunkers. #1 handicap.
8 Purgatory GC

Hole 17

3 173 145 115 17 Ron Kern
Hell's Half Acre is a short par 3 surrounded by 2 acres of sand. A visually stunning hole but hitting the large, wide green is very easy. Picture courtesy Golf Digest aerial view
9 Legends of Indiana

Middle Course Hole 4

4 428 365 305 3 Jim Fazio
A stream on the right awaits the unwary. This stream becomes a lake directly in front of green causing many to lay up. Sand nudging the green in front and back demand a soft, high shot in.
10 Brickyard Crossing GC

Hole 18

4 457 380 349 2 Pete Dye and Jason McCoy
Tough drive across creek and long approach to smallish green protected in front by a deep pot bunker. Drives into the creek bed demand some stiff climbing.
11 Coffin GC

Hole 5

5 533 453 392 16 William Diddel modified by Tim Liddy
Drive from a 40ft cliff to a generous fairway. The second shot requires precise placement to avoid a White River pool on the right and sand on the left.
12 Prairie View GC

Hole 9

4 433 387 337 4 Robert Trent Jones Jr.
Long hole with lakes on left of fairway and protecting the front of this realtively small green. Difficult approach shot must be very accurate.
13 Ironwood GC

Lakes Course Hole 7

3 174 131 103 10 Bob Thompson and Art Kaser
Lots of tee boxes give daily variety to this demanding hole. The island green has a run-off area in the back. Voted best par 3 in 2001 IGGCA.
14 Bear Slide GC

Hole 18

4 449 396 262 12 Dean Refram
Down a lovely valley and up to an isolated hillside green past the creek. This very long hole forces an accurate, long approach to be on in two.
15 The Trophy Club

Hole 16

5 519 481 400 18 Tim Liddy
Two shots down wide shaded fairway lead to an elevated green with a unplayable dropoff to the river that has followed the hole on the left. Second shot must avoid bunkers on the right.
16 Martinsville
GC

Hole 18

4 399 399 386 8 Bob Simmons
Bite off a chewable bit over a wide chasm. Too far left and a 200yd drive will cross fairway and hide in pines. Too far right and you are in for a climb down and a pitch back up.
17 The Fort GC

Hole 5

3 170 135 121 14 Pete Dye
Very scenic par 3 with about 30ft elevation change. Sand and tall grass are ready to catch wayward shots. The bail-out area to front left is very inviting.
18 Eagle Creek GC

Sycamore Course Hole 18

4 430 368 298 6 Pete Dye
Perfect finishing hole voted best par 4 in town in 2001 IGGCA. Down through the dogleg left into a sylvan valley with long afternoon shadows. Long second shot over angled stream directly in front of the green.
