On July 2, 2003 at a quiet reception, Gary Player visited
Southern Dunes (a Gary Player Signature course). About 50 folk attended. After
a light lunch, Mr. Player spent time signing hats, balls, scorecards and
having his picture taken with all comers including an interview on-camera with
Channel 8.

He talked to those present about giving back, thanking God, the joys of
travel, sugar diabetes, eating properly, and other topics.
He also thinks the current rules about clubs and balls are ruining the
Tour. There are two games being played, the amateur and pro. He calls for
string leadership to weaken the balls.
Right now Gary Player Design is developing 5 courses in China.
He wants to be the first player to win on the Tour in 6 decades.

At a putting clinic tips included keeping the putter shaft against your
left arm to prevent wrist cock and pulled putts.

Over in a bunker, he extolled the virtues of a wide stance and an
open-faced pitching wedge. Lots of loft and lots and lots of practice are the
keys.

And from the grass, similar lessons about getting loft, distance, and
making the ball stop. Regarding sand bunkers that aren't near greens: "if
you see fairway sand traps you see the results of a lousy architect."

For some, the excitement of being able to talk to, watch, and be near Gary Player probably outweighed any
lessons he imparted but everyone certainly had a memorable afternoon. All our
thanks to Bob Thompson and Gary Player.
