review: hunter golf bag

By: Indy Golf

We've found the ultimate cart bag. Well, at least the ultimate cart bag for our needs. And our needs are simple - just the luxuries:
  1. Cart Bag - We do most of our golf from a riding cart (old age, ligiments, and joints don't agree with walking 4 miles on uneven grass, up and down hills). A lightweight carry bag is always in the trunk for use when we walk 9 or a par 3 course.
  2. Lots of space - The USGA allows 14 clubs. We carry at least that many, usually 16. Shhhh.
  3. Lots of pockets - Good balls, junk balls, balata, orange, nite-lite balls. Tees, gloves, sunscreen, insect repellent, rolaids, pills, wire brush, tools, pencils, cigarettes, cigars, spare lighter, snacks, book of rules, IGA hole-in-one form, business cards, a clock. Also wallet and keys since we don't like bulky pants.
  4. Some big pockets - Rain pants, rain jacket, bag cover, spare towel, spare shirt, ball retriever, flask of whisky. And we don't even pack shoes in the bag.
  5. Cooler - We like Diet Pepsi and dislike fountain drinks. An insulated compartment is very handy.

Hunter Sports (aka All American Golf in Joliet IL) has the ultimate bag.

Space - The tube is 9 ½" X 8" inside measurement with 14 separate compartments - 4 of which are easily big enough for 2 or 3 clubs. The first impression is that it is big.

Pockets - We count 15 zippered pockets and 3 mesh pockets. Wonderful. There's even a zippered pocket inside another zippered pocket for secure storage. Both side pods have full-height clothing compartments. There's so many pockets we needed a couple of weeks just to memorize where things are. By the way, all the pockets are accessible when it's in the cart. Great design.

Cooler - A removable foam piece turns one pocket into a cooler for three 12oz cans (see below). If placed in a bigger pocket it will hold three 24oz bottles but won't provide complete insulation.

The usual stuff - Umbrella holder that actually holds an umbrella. Rings and hooks for towels. A velcro tab for god-knows-what - oh, that's for your glove so it can dry in the air. Very steady when standing upright. Four handles and one padded shoulder strap.

The quality seems very good. Solid stiching, waterproof cloth, soft shaft-friendly separators. Lifetime warranty on defects. Actually lighter than most vinyl cart bags. All in all, darn good stuff.

The tough part is getting one. All American doesn't have a web site, they rely on outside reps to place the bags in stores and pro shops. We've seen Hunter stand bags in a couple of pro shops but we've seen THIS model bag only at Golden Eagle Golf on the southeast side. $129.

Now if it would just fit into the trunk of our Miata.
