indianapolis visitor's guide

Welcome to Indianapolis. Whether you came for business or for a race, you'll enjoy your stay and if you have some spare time to golf, that's great. Here's some ideas.

The links below lead to course descriptions and then road maps.

"Destination" Courses

Most folks who travel want an memorable, or maybe exciting, day at a first-class course. The top 5 courses to talk about back home are undoubtedly:

Closely behind are:

You'll find great golf on every side of town. You'll also find that greens fees in Indianapolis are very reasonable - the price ranges below are for 18 holes with a cart on weekends. The full list of area courses is in our Course Catalog.

We suggest you call the course directly to inquire about specific days and make reservations.

If you're interested in a Resort to stay at the course, we're somewhat limited.

  • The Brickyard Crossing GC is at the Indianapolis 500 track and has a Comfort Inn on the grounds.
  • The Fort GC in Lawrence has a few rooms available in officers' quarters at the now-closed Fort Harrison on the northeast side. Reservations needed far in advance.
  • Royal Hylands GC, north of Knightstown on the far east side, has an adjacent B&B.
  • The Hamilton County Convention & Visitors Bureau has stay & play packages set up with local hotels. 1-800-776-8687
  • Also on the northeast side, the Fairfield Inn & Suites and the Comfort Suites go out of their way to accommodate golfers.

Indiana does have some good golf resorts.

North: Pine View Golf Resort Monticello, Swan Lake GC Plymouth, Country Meadows Resort Angola. Near Fort Wayne, 2 courses have stay-n-play packages: Noble Hawk GC, and Cobblestone GC.

South: French Lick Springs Resort French Lick, Eagle Pointe Resort Bloomington. Otter Creek GC Columbus has package rates with Holiday Inn and Ramada Inn.

Outside Indianapolis, IndyGolf's Reader Reviews of Indiana Courses might also be helpful.

A Quick Round or some Practice

There are excellent 9-hole courses near I 465. On the north side (Sunrise GC) and the south side (Buffer Park GC) usually do not require tee times except weekend mornings or weekday afternoon league times.

If you are downtown and want to get in some quick practice, the Riverside Golf Academy is located near 38th St and I 65. It has driving range, indoor areas, simulators, putting and chipping areas, and a nicely wooded, lighted 9-hole par 3 course. Near there are 3 city 18-hole courses that sadly do not have 9-hole rates: Coffin GC, Riverside GC, and South Grove GC.

On the near south-side is the Keystone Indoor Golf Dome near the I65 Keystone Ave exit.

The most complete practice facilities are The Golf Preserve on the far north side, near Westfield,. There's indoor practice rooms including sand and computer video analysis. Heated driving range stalls. 7 putting and chipping greens. Physical therapists. Plus a 9-hole executive course designed by Pete Dye and Tim Liddy.

Southern Dunes GC near I465 and SR 37 on the south side has a par 3 9-hole course, 18 championship holes, heated stalls, and an indoor putting green.

In Franklin, try the Legends of Indiana. 27 holes plus 18 par 3 holes plus a major outdoor practice facility and instructional programs.

Here for a Race?

The Indianapolis 500 isn't the only race in town anymore. There's the Brickyard 400, the NHRA Nationals, and the Formula 1 race. Plenty of reasons to visit Indy. And the RCA ATP Tennis Championships in August. Plus, we're the "Amateur Sports Capital of the World".

Note that the Brickyard's golf course is normally closed to the public the week of races.

Traditionally, the night before the races at the Brickyard is party time on Georgetown road on the west edge of the 500 track. Open containers and coolers are expected as people stroll the area gawking at each other. The State Police also stroll by regularly and there is very little trouble.

Like Good Beer?

Our sister site,  Indiana Beer.com lists all the good bars, brewpubs, and liquor stores in the state.
