Our Comments
This is a big wooded course reminiscent of Ironwood GC in
Indianapolis. Not as hilly as Eagle Creek and bigger in scope than
Martinsville GC. If it was closer we'd be regulars.
We played the first half in a rainstorm but the greens
remained very good.
The season really is shorter just 150 miles north and, in
fact, often quite cooler in the summertime.
We took advantage of the
Stay and Play
package. $109 per person includes 2 rounds of golf each and a night
in an excellent Best Western in Kendallville. Double occupancy of
course. We used one round at
Noble Hawk,
just 5 miles down the road, and one at Cobblestone.
$139 per person gets 2 rounds and two nights.
7/28/04 - In excellent condition throughout.
Greens and fairways both soft yet fast. Woods surrounding holes are
almost all red-staked to play as lateral water hazards - a good
thing since undergrowth is too thick to even look for balls.

What else to do in
Northeast Indiana
So why drive 150 miles for a couple of rounds of superior
golf? Well, it is superior golf and that might be reason enough.
Both Cobblestone GC and
Noble Hawk Golf
Links are worth the trip alone.
Kendallville has a quite interesting Mid-America Windmill
Museum and the Gene Stratton Porter state historic site.
Shipshewana is an
Amish area famed for quilts, cheese, crafts, etc. Most stores are
closed on Sundays.
- Blue Gate Restaurant
- Bread Box Bakery
- Davis Mercantile
- Weaver's Furniture
- Shipshewana Auction and Flea Market - Tues & Wed.
- Quilt stores: world-famous Lolly's, Yoders Department
Store, Spectors.
Topeka has Owl Toy Craft, Star Candles, Lambright Country
Chimes, Fern's Country Foods, and Tiffany's Restaurant.
And don't forget the
Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, IN - just 15 miles
east.
Our plan was to to leave Indy about 9am Saturday for a 1pm
tee time at Noble Hawk - leaving plenty of time for a hearty lunch
at Mad Anthony's Brewpub in Fort Wayne. Sunday morning we played at
Cobblestone and even stopped in at Walnut Creek in Marion for a
quick 9 on the way home.
I've often been a quilt widow while my wife browses in
fabric stores and this would be a great place to be dropped off
while she's on a stash-hunting trip to Lolly's.
And, like we said, there's great golf in Kendallville. |

7/27/04 - Played both Cobblestone and Noble Hawk
on the stay and play for $123, which included two rounds, cart, room
and breakfast. I have played many courses with packages and this one
is by far the best value out there. Cobblestone was in good
condition with lots of scenery. If this course was in Indy it would
be $65 to play. These two courses are very good and a real bargain.
5/29/02 - At IndyGolf and Golf Digest's
recommendations, I stopped and played this course in Kendallville
while returning from Detroit on business. At not more than 20
minutes off I-69, I'd recommend this short diversion to any of your
readers who sometimes drive to Michigan on business. While I don't
quite find it worthy of the 4 ½ stars given by Golf Digest (putting
it in the rare air Indiana classics The Fort, Brickyard, Prairie
View, Rock Hollow, etc...), it's definitely worthy of 4 stars, and
at 18 holes w/cart in the mid $30 range, it's arguably a better
value. Conditioning is on par with those others, but the difficulty
level isn't quite there. While it is esthetically very pleasing,
most of the trees and water are far enough off the fairway that you
have to hit a particularly poor tee shot to find it on most holes.
Sand traps don't come into play much. I very much liked the course.
5/18/02 - Played Cobblestone in the wind and cold.
Course was in outstanding shape considering recent batch of heavy
rain and cold. Fairways very green and rough very thick. Greens had
been aerated about a week prior, but still rolling true. While
Kendallville has nothing much to offer, the play and stay along with
Noble Hawk GL
well worth the drive north. |
