Our Comments

You gotta be a mountain goat to walk this massive course. It's hilly.

Interesting about the architect. It seems they wanted to build a course and there was government money available so they went out with bulldozers to carve out a course. Evidently this was supervised by an IU official that didn't have any course construction experience - some say it was Jim Soutar of the Bloomington CC with IU's athletic director Pual Harrell. After the track was carved, no reputable architect wanted to touch it. As a result of this amateur layout, there are many blind holes and some places where it's just plain dangerous on the tee box.

If you can play the first time with an experienced local, you'll appreciate the scouting report.

Doesn't come back to the clubhouse at the turn. There's a snack stand at the confluence of holes number 2, 11, and 13.

There are some limestone outcroppings in fairways. Play them as immovable obstructions.

Check out the pictures in the clubhouse. Construction pictures are interesting. Team photos of all the IU NCAA championship teams are impressive.

An additional practice area is available near #2 tee with greens and chipping areas

6/22/01 - Course was busy for a Friday but they got us on. Roughs were notably long - especially going into the weekend. Lots of hunting for balls.

The par 3 course is in an open field with no shade anywhere.

9/15/04 - Greens were inconsistent and very slow. Fairways were very dry, and some areas had more dirt than grass. Course is very hilly and there are no water hazards. Lots of trees. Par 3 holes are very tough, all three at 200+ yards from the back tees. The back nine is considerably more difficult than the front, with 8 par 4 holes and one par 3. Three of the par 4s are 425 yds + from the back tees, and uphill. Be prepared for 200+ yard second shots, uphill. If this was kept up better, it could be a very beautiful golf course, especially in the fall. - Dan

7/24/01 - It is a good challenge for the average golfer. Do not attempt to walk this course unless you enjoy abusing yourself. Quite a few of the greens are "plateau-ed", meaning you are below the level of the green if not accurate with approach shots. Worth the drive to Bloomington. - Joe Loukota

7/11/01 - I play this course 1 or 2 times a summer. I usually try to hit it as part of my 'college golf tour' (usually IU and PU - want to add ND to it). It is very narrow. Lots of trees. It really is one of the most scenic courses you can play in this state - if you like hills and trees. The layout is not a great design and does not make sense at times. It feels like a really old course.

Interesting setup - only three par 3s - all over 200yds. Yeah, that is a good time. I have often thought a 200+ yard par 3 is one of the hardest holes for the average player (like me), but 3 of them? One is really downhill, so it only plays around 200.

Playing this course in the fall is a love/hate proposition. The trees and views are stunning with the colors of fall. The downside is that you need to bring about 3 dozen balls that will find their way under leaves. This course can eat balls to begin with, but with all the leaves it is the hungriest I have ever played. - Greg Golightly

5/00 - In good shape, lots of trees and unforgiving rough. The killer for me was that this course is looong - from the whites it's nearly as long as Eagle Creek or Brookshire are from the tips. The back nine has 3 par 4s that are over 400 yards. I enjoyed playing it, but I would consider playing from the forward tees next time. - John Nixon

Owner's Comments

Indiana University's golf facility provides a first class playing and practice area. The 18-hole championship course remains the top attraction with its layout located in the wooded, rolling hills of eastern Bloomington. The greens are among the largest in the nation.
