Our Comments

Tim Dykstra has created a new, premiere course that is very reminiscent of Twin Bridges and Bear Slide in the Indy area. We highly recommend it.

Although it is technically a residential course, there will be only 78 upscale houses and 25 condos. Right now only a dozen have been built. Lots available.

They specialize in service here. A pampered golfer is a happy golfer.

We played at Noble Hawk in April, 2001 and despite an inch of rain in the morning, our afternoon round under gray skies, while wet, was excellent. We only wish the pictures (below) had nice puffy clouds and greened-up trees.

The season really is shorter just 150 miles north and, in fact, often quite cooler in the summertime.

We took advantage of the Stay and Play package. $109 per person includes 2 rounds of golf each  and a night in an excellent Best Western in Kendallville. Double occupancy of course. We used one round at Noble Hawk and one at Cobblestone GC just 5 miles up the road.

$139 per person gets 2 rounds and two nights.

What else to do in Northeast Indiana

So why drive 150 miles for a couple of rounds of superior golf? Well, it is superior golf and that might be reason enough. Both Noble Hawk and Cobblestone GC are worth the trip alone.

Kendallville has a quite interesting Mid-America Windmill Museum and the Gene Stratton Porter state historic site.

Shipshewana is an Amish area famed for quilts, cheese, crafts, etc. Most stores are closed on Sundays.

  • Blue Gate Restaurant
  • Bread Box Bakery
  • Davis Mercantile
  • Weaver's Furniture
  • Shipshewana Auction and Flea Market - Tues & Wed.
  • Quilt stores: world-famous Lolly's, Yoders Department Store, Spectors.

Topeka has Owl Toy Craft, Star Candles, Lambright Country Chimes, Fern's Country Foods, and Tiffany's Restaurant.

And don't forget the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, IN - just 15 miles east.

Our plan was to to leave Indy about 9am Saturday for a 1pm tee time at Noble Hawk - leaving plenty of time for a hearty lunch at Mad Anthony's Brewpub in Fort Wayne. Sunday morning we played at Cobblestone and even stopped in at Walnut Creek in Marion for a quick 9 on the way home.

I've often been a quilt widow while my wife browses in fabric stores and this would be a great place to be dropped off while she's on a stash-hunting trip to Lolly's.

And, like we said, there's great golf in Kendallville.

12/13/04 - Played on a Friday morning in December and found the staff to be very nice as usual. The course is one of my favorites to play because it is always in great shape and it's fairly challenging. The folks here have done a good job maintaining the course. Tee boxes are well taken care of and the greens are fairly smooth. Be careful of over shooting the 15th green. Do not land your ball in this guys back yard, you wont get your ball back.

6/9/04 - I have played this course numerous times and every time have had a tremendous experience. No matter what the weather conditions are the course is always in fantastic shape. - Eric

6/5/02 - I played here for the first time and loved the course from the start. Some of the highlights include lots of undulations in fairways and especially greens. Not quite as severe as Hickory Stick GC, but similar. The conditioning and value were both exceptional.

The course portrays itself as as a "Scottish links" but I'm not sure how accurate that really is. They do have such staples as double greens and the aforementioned undulations. However, most traditional links courses provide the opportunity to run the ball onto the green, and that's certainly not the case here.

Overall, the course is a real gem even if it is somewhat off the beaten path. Two tips if you decide to make the trip. First, exercise caution on the seventh hole. I didn't, and it scrapped a solid round. Second, you have to make a trip to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in nearby Auburn. They have an absolutely breathtaking collection of vehicles that would make any Saudi prince envious! - Adrian Terrel

5/19/02 - Played Noble Hawk in great conditions for the front and very windy and cold on the back. Very nice course with two different personalities. The front nine and last three our four holes reminding me very much of The Trophy Club. First four or five holes of back carved out of a woods which require proper club selection off the tee. Very smooth fairways, thick rough and slick but true greens. Well worth the drive north for the stay and play with Cobblestone GC. Only complaint with Noble Hawk is no yardage markings on card for distances to water, sand, etc from tees. Makes a few tee shots on back nine very challenging for first visit.
