Our Comments

This is possibly the most scenic golf course in Indiana. There are heavy woods, majestic trees, natural ponds and wildlife areas, and hills, hills, hills. There are fountains in some ponds and the 18th hole has a quite large waterfall behind the green. Magnificent.

The signature 18th hole  a 412yd par 4 that goes over a long forced-carry valley and bends right. It's reminiscent of the 18th at Martinsville GC - but with water at the bottom, 4 sand traps on the inside of the turn and, of course, the waterfall perched far underneath the clubhouse. The best single hole in Indiana.

Their motto is "17 Fantastic Holes and 1 Breathtaking Hole"

They have an excellent course map with major yardages available at the desk but you'll need to be looking for it to find it.

Sultan's Run is named for Supreme Sultan, World Champion American Saddlebred  horse raised right on this site. Each hole is named for one of his progeny.

It's a robust course but not meticulously manicured. Our visit in June found a few bald patches on greens. Tee boxes were lush. Grass in fairways was solid and cut short for a long roll. It was 91° and some of the water thermoses were empty in the early afternoon - that's a point off.

A member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program complete with a 1.25 mile nature walking trail that overlooks part of the course.

The Silver tees are quite playable by mortals.

6/30/04 - An excellent layout and is one of the most majestic I have played in this state. Conditions were not as good as expected, however. There were quite a few bare spots about. Greens and traps were excellent. Almost total isolation from others on the course. Played all the way back and it is just about the perfect challenge. I definitely hit the wrong shot off some of the tees and got into some trouble because of it. The par 3 holes are monsters, all over 190 yards with plenty of water in play on at least 3 of 4. Joined the head pro on the last and he was very friendly and willing to give me some advice. Of course I hit two near perfect shots on that hole, so there wasn't much he could help me with! I will return the next time I'm down there on business. - Dan

6/30/03 - This is a beautiful course (nice layout) and not many golfers. We played 27 holes on Thursday and 36 on Friday. People at the course we very very friendly. Course seemed a bit burned up but still beautiful. - Susie

4/19/03 - If you don't play another course in Indiana play this one. We have gone down twice this spring for a weekend package through the Jasper Days Inn. 78 holes of golf at 2 Jasper courses and overnight at Days Inn for $78.00 per person. Course was in good condition. No two holes are even close to resembling each other. Greens were fast. Staff is great. My favorite course hands down. Greg Cifizzari

6/17/02 - Wow! Sultan's Run is beautiful and in wonderful shape. Luckily, we had two days there to get a better feel for the course. The first time through was blind - not knowing the outlay of the course, but on the second day, we were experienced and definitely took it all in (including seeing two deer within 7 feet of us). It took 3 hours to get there, but well worth the trip. Will definitely make another trip to play this beautiful course. Green were good (seemed to be cut a little long, slower than expected). Both days felt like it was our own private course until the 14th or 15th hole. Able to play in 3 or 3.5 hours. Not certain of the real prices because we had a hotel-golf package which was wonderful with Day's Inn in Jasper. Got 18 holes first day, 27 holes next day.  The Day's Inn were very helpful with getting us on the course and making all the arrangements. We then went on to French Lick for two days of golf at the "Hill Course" - not near as impressive as Sultan's Run. - Susie McCarty

5/20/01 - The course is in great shape. Greens are very hard to read for both break and speed. No commercial but the package through Holiday Inn is a pretty good deal if you can endure the distance to get there. All in all a good trip. We had a hole in one on #5 in our foursome which made it memorable. - Louis Broering
