Our Comments

There are few trees and wind is a major factor. Basically flat with high mounding that sometimes steers balls back to fairways.

Although there is usually a clear path from the mid-fairway to the green, many times you'll be chipping over sand to reach the green if you're too close or on the wrong side.

It will be a sad to see more homes added to the area - especially the back side. We hear lots are selling slowly.

It's windy at Timbergate all the time.

If the pin on #4 is on the back left, it's almost an automatic extra stroke.

This has grown up to be just a hair under the very top-level courses in town.

4/20/02 - The fairways were perfect, even after many rainy days. Greens, were very fast and smooth but old pock-marks were sometimes unavoidable.

3/19/01 - In great shape at the very start of the season. Wind from the east makes it a completely different course.

9/1/04 - Played Sunday after the rain, and the course was in great condition. Although the course is flat with no trees, when the wind blows it makes some holes very tough. The $27 twilight rate for this caliber of course is a super bargain. The greens were very fast and firm with some pock marks. Played the front nine in 90 minutes and 18 in just under 31/2 hours with waits on some holes. Worth the drive from Indy. - Phil

6/21/04 - While watching the US Open I decided to go and play a Links style course. I took advantage of the $27 twilight special at Timbergate. That was a very good decision. The staff could not have been more helpful to this first timer. The course was in first rate condition. From the back tees, with a 20 mph wind from the north and quick greens, it felt sort of like Shinnecock Hills, only fair. It was well worth the short drive south. - CGS

5/12/04 - Nice little course- fairways were in great shape - greens had recently been worked on and were a little rough - staff was very helpful and the price was right at $ 27.00 after 2:00 - will go back and play it many times.

8/11/03 - Overall, the course was in very good shape. Excellent fairways and greens and the $27 twilight rate was a big plus. At least half of the holes had sand or grass bunkers around the greens, but not all of them are shown on the hole-by-hole maps on the scorecards making shot selection tricky. A number of times we would see there was something near the green but had no idea if it was sand, a grass bunker, or just a low spot near the green. The clubhouse folks were overly helpful and professional. All in all a very fun course to play.

6/9/03 - I have played here many times. It is maintained in excellent condition. The staff is the best of any course I have played. Bob P.

7/15/02 - This course continues to be a value for your $$$. The fairways are always immaculate and the greens in great shape for the amount of traffic. Their twilight rate is exceptional with my only complaint that they don't actively monitor pace of play with a ranger. - Gspalla

5/30/02 - Played Timbergate last Thursday with a group of 24 players. The course was in excellent shape and the greens are perfect. I play most of the courses in the Indianapolis area during the year and the greens at Timbergate are the best I've played on in a long time. They are certainly the best greens of any course on the south side of Indianapolis (the only greens that even come close are Hickory Stick's). The staff was very friendly and courteous and the price of $35 per person (we had a coupon) makes this course a real bargain. We'll definitely go back. - Mike Coombs

8/13/01 - I played Timbergate in the father/son and the course in OK condition. The putting green makes you think they have great greens but when you go on the course they are not up to that condition. Rates are good.

7/12/01 - Very well maintained and the staff was very friendly, accommodating and helpful. The greens and fairways are in great shape. Great twilight special. I teed off a little ahead of 3PM and paid only $27 including cart. Finished in a bit over 4 hours, playing in a foursome. Very convenient to get to. Right off 65. The only negatives, in my opinion, are that there are no trees on the course, and there is only 2 levels of grass. It would be nice to see a "first cut" of rough adjacent to the fairways, rather than punishing a player with the full rough for barely leaking out of the fairway, as happened to me a few times today. I will certainly play there again. - Joel Hettmansperger

7/10/01 - I was amazed at your ranking the Legends of Indiana above Timbergate. I have played both courses a lot, and Timbergate, to me, is a much better course. The course is in excellent condition and it is well designed. The price is about the same and Timbergate is the one that keeps me coming back. I admit the practice facilities at the Legends are first rate. - Steve Vance

The 4-ball rating on our Course Catalog are the nationally-known "destination" courses where you would take a client you want to impress. Usually 4 stars in Golf Digest's poll. New courses can take a few years to smooth over rough spots. Purgatory GC and The Trophy Club jumped right to the forefront but Timbergate, in our humble opinion, isn't quite there yet. Not scenic enough maybe with the undeveloped roads and home sites. Great track though. It will only improve with age. - Bob Ostrander, editor.

9/7/00 - Twilight rates of $27 starting at noon is tops! Most enjoyable, 4-hours for my 4some. - Don Jean

8/11/ 00 - Started slow but played in 4-1/2 hours. Fairways in great shape but the greens were a little rough. Fourteenth hole playing 165 shot an ace, first of many I hope. Nice course but a little boring. - Cory.

5/14/00 - Charles Ray Harmon - Fell absolutely in love with this new course owned by the city of Edinburgh. (No, it is not owned by Fuzzy) The lay out is so great. Many many breathtaking holes that are also a challenge. The course is in remarkable good shape for only being open one year. Although the fairways had been plugged we played the ball down everywhere with no problems. The greens are like a carpet. I could go on and on about this course but you must play it to really appreciate it. The wind was 30 mph too and just killed some shots but I left anticipating my next visit.

4/22/00 - A very nice course and not expensive. This is one of my favorite because the it is always in very good shape and the staff is nice. I like this course because if you are having a good round then you can shoot pretty low, but if you can't drive the ball in the fairway then you are in big trouble.

9/3/99 - The fairways were well watered with some standing water and soft areas but they still provided some roll. The greens were smooth and faster than expected. The course is advertised as a "Hard" one but I found it to be relatively easy with no water really in play (from the burgundy tees) and I only got into one sand trap. This was the first time my partner and I had played the course and he shot 2 over par. We decided that we would probably play the course again.

7/28/99 - This is one of the nicest courses in Indiana and it just opened this year. The fairways are in incredible shape; like hitting off velvet! The greens are also in mint condition. If you're having trouble hitting the ball straight however, this course is not for you. The fairways are narrow and after the first cut of rough, the heather is at least 3 - 4 feet high and thick.

NOTE: The personnel working the course "conveniently overlooked" personal coolers with water in them due to the extreme heat. More courses could learn from this logic!

6/23/99 - John Coombs - For a new course it is in really good shape. The greens were fairly slow, but that's probably a combination of weather and the fact that it's a new course. Don't let the wide open look fool you. Even though there aren't many hazards or traps, there's plenty of rough lurking. At the twilight rate, it's probably the best $25 course (including cart) I've played. Only drawback is the course isn't that challenging compared to others in the area.

6/23/99 - For a course only 2 months old, in good shape. Except for a few spots, you could play it down everywhere. Water on front side does not really come into play much except on #9. Back side definitely harder than front side and water does come into play.

5/10/99 - Dennis Underwood - Excellent condition and the staff is great. We ended up behind a 5some that played extremely slow and when we asked them to speed up almost had an incident, but the staff took care of the problem and fixed so we can play again at no cost. Play it quick as when the word gets out you won't be able to get a tee time. You might want to check out some of the holes before you blast with the driver as long hitters can get in trouble off the tee straightaway."

Owner's Comments

Timbergate is a Municipally owned Golf Course designed in joint effort with Clyde Johnston Designs, Inc, Hilton Head, South Carolina and PGA Professional Frank Urban (Fuzzy) Zoeller. This "Links" style course is 6,900 yards in length from the Championship tees. The greens, fairways and multiple tee systems are dense/velvety bent grass interfacing with plush double-cut bluegrass roughs which in-turn transition into shaggy fescue grasses in the out-of-play areas. The grassing system will provide great variation in color. Eleven beautiful lakes and approximately eighty-five white sand bunkers dot the course for added beauty and playing excitement. The course has a driving range, practice green, state-of-the-art irrigation system and a fully equipped maintenance staff already on-board. A 7,500 square foot Club House is under construction.
